BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
ABOUT
Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction aims to restore the shape and volume of a woman’s breast after loss due to cancer, trauma, or infection. The team at AZATACA Plastic Surgery has extensive experience in reconstructive work, drawing from years of multidisciplinary practice at Singapore General Hospital.
PROCEDURES
Procedural Approaches
Breast reconstruction can be performed using implants, your own tissue, or a combination of both.
Implant Reconstruction
This can be done in one or two surgeries. Your surgeon will advise which method is most suitable.
Flap Reconstruction
Tissue may be taken from the tummy, thigh, or other suitable areas. Surgeons aim to take only what is necessary to shape the breast, preserving muscle whenever possible for shorter recovery times.
The team is experienced in microsurgical reconstruction techniques, including:
- DIEP flaps (from the tummy, muscle-preserving)
- TUG flaps (from the thigh)
INDICATIONS
Who May Consider Breast Reconstruction
- Women who have lost, or are going to lose, their breast to cancer
- Women who have had silicone removed from their breasts
- Those who have suffered from severe infection or trauma affecting the breast
When Reconstruction Can Be Done
- Breast reconstruction may be performed at the same time as mastectomy for the best outcomes, but it can also be done years later.
SAFETY
Risks & Considerations
Implant Reconstruction
- Seroma (fluid collection) that may require prolonged drainage
- Risk of infection involving the implant
- Capsular contracture (hardening around the implant) occurring years later
- Rare risk of Breast Implant Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
Flap Surgery
- Small risk of inadequate blood supply to the flap
- If blood supply cannot be restored, the flap may need to be removed
*There is no evidence that breast reconstruction affects breast cancer recurrence or treatment.
AFTERCARE
Downtime & Recovery
- Implant reconstruction: recovery typically takes about 1–2 weeks
- Flap reconstruction: most patients return to normal activities by one month
- Surgeons aim to match the opposite breast as much as possible in one operation. If symmetry is not achieved, small revision procedures may be recommended.
