ABOUT
What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a plastic surgical procedure that reduces the labia minora and the labia majora, the skin folds surrounding the vulva, to relieve symptoms women experience from twisting and tugging of the labia.
The size, shape and colour of the labia can change with ageing or as a result of childbirth. Labiaplasty is done for both functional improvement and aesthetic reasons.
PROCEDURES
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure is done to reduce the labia minora so that they do not hang below the hair-bearing labia majora. It may be performed to:
- Reduce asymmetry when one side is longer than the other.
- Reduce length so the labia do not twist, tug or fall out of a bathing suit.
Anaesthesia & Setting
Labiaplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. It may be done as a single operation or in conjunction with other operations.
INDICATIONS
Who May Consider Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty may be considered if you experience symptoms related to the labia, such as:
- Twisting or tugging of the labia.
- Changes in size, shape or colour with ageing.
- Changes after childbirth.
- Asymmetry when one labium is longer than the other.
- Concerns about the labia hanging below the labia majora or falling out of a bathing suit.
SAFETY

The complications of labiaplasty are described as uncommon, but may include:
- Permanent scarring.
- Infections.
- Bleeding.
- Irritation.
- Nerve damage leading to increased or decreased sensitivity.
When Surgery May Not Be Suitable
Labia reduction surgery is relatively contraindicated if you have active infection or active gynaecological diseases.
