ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)
ABOUT
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens lax abdominal muscles to provide a more pleasing and slimmer contour to the abdomen.
PROCEDURES
Surgical Techniques
Traditional Abdominoplasty
An incision is made at the bikini line from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. A circular incision around the navel frees the umbilicus. The abdominal skin and fat are elevated off the muscle wall. If the muscle wall is lax, it may be tightened with sutures (plication).
The abdominal skin is pulled downward, excess tissue is removed, a new opening is created for the umbilicus, and the skin is closed in layers.
Mini Abdominoplasty
Used when there is less excess lower abdominal tissue with or without lax muscle tone. A shorter bikini-line incision is made. The abdominal skin and fat are elevated off the muscle fascia. Instead of a circular incision around the navel, the umbilicus is floated by cutting its stalk above the fascia, allowing it to move downward when the skin is pulled.
The lax muscle fascia may be tightened with sutures, and excess skin is removed before closing.
