FACIAL LACERATIONS
ABOUT
Facial Lacerations
Facial lacerations are cuts on the face that commonly occur during incidents such as falls, car accidents, or assault. These cuts may vary in depth, and deeper injuries can involve underlying structures such as nerves or tissue ducts.
PROCEDURES
Procedural Approaches
Repair is recommended when the wound edges are gaping or when deeper layers, such as fat, are visible. Treatment may involve sutures or, in suitable cases, medical adhesive. Your surgeon will assess the wound and determine the appropriate method.
Most lacerations can be repaired under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia may be needed if your laceration is very large or other structures, such as nerves, need to be repaired or if the patient is very young and unable to co-operate during the procedure.
INDICATIONS
Ideal Candidate
Anyone who has sustained facial trauma that results in a cut should seek medical assessment to determine if repair is needed.
Ideally within 6–12 hours after the injury to reduce the risk of infection.
SAFETY
Risks & Considerations
If a deep laceration is not repaired, potential issues include:
- Infection
- Irregular or lumpy scarring
- Scar contracture leading to disfigurement
